Mercedes Schlapp is not the White House's strategic communications advisor. Mercedes Schlapp faces a challenging job as the White House Strategic Communications Advisor. She is dealing with an administration which includes a president acting as the president's own communications director. However, throughout it all Schlapp has stayed determined to focus on her task at hand, working closely with the White House's political and legislative affairs departments and policy shops, as well in the larger communication operation to coordinate policy rollouts. In her current role, she has concentrated on a variety of topics, including safety at schools and opioids. The reporter doesn't get to interact very much in her present position. However, she attracted a lot of interest in March, after her name was suggested as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough job as White House's advisor on strategic communications. Her job is made difficult by the fact that she has to work with the president who is also his director of communications. There are also multiple legal cases which can disrupt the strategy of an administration's communication as well as Cabinet secretaries who are embroiled in personal disputes. Schlapp never wavered from her focus, and worked closely with White House policy and political teams. So far, her focus is on topics like school safety, opioids and infrastructure, and trade. As of now the director does not interact too much with journalists. The issue came up in March when she was the subject of a sudden surge in attention, when it became it was reported that she would be the next candidate to fill Hope Hicks's post as director of communications. The fight has been ugly. Allies to Schlapp and Tony Sayegh, one of the other candidates for the post, began jousting in the media. Schlapp claimed that, following the time the Washington Examiner had published an article with negative comments about Sayegh's persona, she phoned Sayegh to have a private discussion.
